Oman is one of the more straightforward Gulf countries to enter and live in — but only if you understand how its visa system is structured. Whether you're planning a short visit, a job assignment, or a long-term move, the rules, fees, and processes differ significantly by nationality and purpose. This guide covers everything you need to know about Oman visas for expats in 2025.
Do You Need a Visa for Oman?
Oman offers visa-free entry to citizens of several dozen countries, primarily GCC states and selected Western nations. Citizens of the following groups enter without a prior visa:
- GCC nationals (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar): visa-free, no time limit for visits
- Visa-on-arrival or visa-free at the border: citizens of UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, most EU member states, and approximately 70 other countries can obtain a visa on arrival at Muscat International Airport or border crossings
If your nationality is not on the visa-free list, you must apply for a visa in advance through the Royal Oman Police (ROP) e-Visa portal or through an approved Omani sponsor. Check the official ROP website for the current comprehensive list — it is updated periodically.
Tourist and Short-Stay Visas
eVisa (Online Application)
The Oman eVisa is the recommended route for most nationalities. Applied through the Royal Oman Police e-services portal, it is processed within 2–5 working days and emailed directly to the applicant.
- Single entry, 10 days: OMR 5 (~USD 13)
- Single entry, 30 days: OMR 20 (~USD 52)
- Multiple entry, 1 year: OMR 50 (~USD 130)
The multiple-entry annual visa is excellent value for frequent visitors or those testing life in Oman before committing to residency. It allows stays of up to 30 days per visit.
Visa on Arrival
Eligible nationalities (the visa-on-arrival list overlaps significantly with the eVisa list) can pay at the airport kiosk or border counter. The standard fee is OMR 20 for a 30-day single-entry visa. eVisa in advance is generally faster and recommended to avoid queues at Muscat airport.
Work Visa and Residence Permit
If you are moving to Oman for employment, your employer is responsible for sponsoring your work visa and residence permit. The process works as follows:
Step 1 — Entry Visa
Your employer obtains a work entry visa on your behalf before you arrive. This is a single-entry visa valid for 30 days, used to enter Oman and begin the residence permit process.
Step 2 — Medical Examination
Within your first days in Oman, you attend a government medical centre for a blood test (HIV, hepatitis, tuberculosis screening). This is mandatory for all expatriate workers and costs approximately OMR 15–25.
Step 3 — Residence Card (Expatriate Card)
Once the medical is cleared, your employer submits the residence permit application to the Royal Oman Police. You receive an expatriate card — a biometric ID card valid for 2 years, renewable. Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks from medical clearance.
Costs and Employer Responsibilities
By Omani labour law, employers bear the costs of your work visa, residence permit, and medical examination. If an employer asks you to pay these costs yourself, this is a red flag. Salary must be paid in Omani Rials via the Wage Protection System (WPS). The legal minimum notice period is 30 days for contracts under 3 years.
Family Residence Visa
Employed expatriates can sponsor immediate family members (spouse and children under 18) on a family residence visa, provided they meet an income threshold. In 2025, the sponsoring employee typically needs to earn at least OMR 350–400/month to sponsor a spouse, with an additional OMR 100–150 per child required by some employers' internal policies (the law itself sets the minimum at OMR 300 for family sponsorship in most categories).
Required documents typically include: marriage certificate (attested and translated), birth certificates for children, passport copies, salary certificate, and accommodation evidence (tenancy contract). Processing takes 3–6 weeks through the ROP eServices portal or the sponsoring company's HR department.
Self-Sponsorship and Freelance Visa
Oman does not yet have a dedicated freelance or digital nomad visa as of 2025. However, several options exist for self-employed expats:
- Investor/business owner residence: If you establish a company in Oman (including a single-person LLC), you can sponsor yourself as a business owner/director. Minimum capital requirements apply — OMR 150,000 for a standard Omani LLC with foreign ownership above 70%, though free zone entities have lower thresholds.
- Multiple-entry tourist visa: Some remote workers use the annual multiple-entry tourist visa for extended stays while working for overseas clients. This is a grey area legally — Oman's immigration rules do not explicitly authorise "working remotely" on a tourist visa. Do this at your own risk and seek legal advice if in doubt.
Investor Visa
Foreign nationals who invest in Oman through qualifying channels can obtain a 5-year renewable investor residence permit. This requires:
- Minimum investment of OMR 500,000 in an Omani project or company (as defined by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion)
- Alternatively, purchase of real estate in designated integrated tourism complexes (ITCs) at a minimum value of OMR 500,000
- Evidence of ongoing active business operations or investment
The investor visa confers the right to live, work, and own property in Oman. It does not extend automatically to family members but family residence can be applied for separately.
Oman Golden Residency (Long-Term Residence)
Introduced in 2021 and refined since, the Oman Golden Residency is the country's premium long-term visa, offering a 10-year renewable residence permit with expanded rights compared to standard expatriate residence.
Who Is Eligible?
- Real estate investors: purchase of property in a designated ITC worth at least OMR 500,000
- Business investors: investment of at least OMR 500,000 in a qualifying Omani enterprise
- Retired foreign nationals: over 55 years old with documented monthly income of at least OMR 4,000 (approximately USD 10,400) from pension or investment
- Specialists and skilled professionals: in sectors designated as priorities by the government (healthcare, technology, education, engineering)
- Exceptional talent: outstanding scientists, artists, athletes, or academics at ministerial discretion
Key Benefits
- 10-year renewable residence, no employer sponsorship required
- Right to own property in designated areas
- Can sponsor family members
- Access to government healthcare and educational services at resident rates
The Golden Residency does not provide a path to citizenship — Omani citizenship is almost never granted to non-Omanis.
Visa Extension and Overstay Consequences
Overstaying your visa in Oman carries fines of OMR 10 per day, and extended overstays can result in deportation and a re-entry ban. For tourist visas approaching expiry, it is possible to leave briefly to the UAE or Bahrain and re-enter on a new visa, though this "visa run" strategy is increasingly scrutinised. For employment-related residence, extension is handled by your employer through the ROP portal before the card expires.
Practical Checklist: Documents You Will Need
Regardless of visa type, the following documents are almost universally required. Prepare originals plus certified copies:
- Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity beyond intended stay)
- Recent passport-size photographs (white background)
- Completed application form (most now submitted online via the ROP portal)
- Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or tenancy agreement)
- Return flight ticket (for tourist visas)
- Bank statement showing sufficient funds (typically OMR 500+ equivalent for tourist visa)
- Travel/health insurance (recommended, not always mandatory)
- For employment/family visas: employer letter, salary certificate, attested civil documents
